Healthy Dietitian-Approved Treats

Are you searching for a healthy, or at least a semi-healthy, treat that will help you stay on course when you’re following a diet? Don’t worry, you have more options than you might think! Check out our list of dietitian-approved treats to see what we mean.

Tip: The dietitian-approved treats discussed below can serve as healthier alternatives to higher calorie treats, but be sure to control your portions, no matter what.

3 Dietitian-Approved Treats That Satisfy

1. Popcorn or Kettle Corn

Believe it or not, lightly sweetened kettle corn and regular popcorn are considered dietitian-approved treats because you can find pre-popped bags and microwaveable bags that contain 70 calories or less in a 1-cup serving. Even the American Heart Association says that, when prepared right, popcorn is a healthy snack.

This food is naturally fat free, and it is low in calories, as long as you are not adding a lot of oil and butter to it. For example, if you have an air popper at home, that’s better than using a pan of oil that would increase the calorie count. And, remember to go light on the salt too (1/4 teaspoon of salt will give you a whopping 25% of your daily allowance for sodium!).

2. Slow-Churned Ice Cream

Reduced fat or slow-churned ice cream is yet another one of the dietitian-approved healthy treats that are sure to satisfy your cravings. Aim to purchase ice cream that contains 130 calories or less per 1-cup serving, and avoid large scoops.

Why slow-churned ice cream? It’s a good way to indulge in this treat without getting the high calories that can come with ice cream from brands like Ben and Jerry’s. But, if you can’t find reduced fat or slow-churned ice creams, you can try yogurt blend ice creams too. Just stick with having a single scoop.

3. Pudding

Instant Sugar-Free Jello, rather than other mixes that are high in sugar, can be a great way to get your fix for pudding without feeling guilty. Instant pudding that is sugar-free is sweet and creamy, but a cup will contain only 70 calories, provided that you make it using nonfat milk (you can also use a non-dairy milk as well, and that might help you reduce your calorie intake too).

Smarter Choices Will Satisfy Cravings and Keep You on Track

When you know how to make smarter choices every day, even when it comes down to giving yourself a little treat, you can rest assured that you’re taking the right steps towards maintaining or improving your health and your weight. Use the tips and insights above to improve your diet with ease!
