Thanksgiving Calories Quiz

Thanksgiving calories are notoriously high. That tasty feast with your family involves an average consumption of 3,000 calories.  That’s just for the one meal, not including whatever else you had before you sat down at the dinner table. While it’s important to be able to enjoy yourself and to avoid feeling deprived of tradition and favorite dishes, understanding what they contain can help you to rebalance your plate and choose the right portion sizes.

Prevent Overeating (too much) by Understanding Thanksgiving Calories

Nobody should realistically be expected to count every one of their Thanksgiving calories and have to skip out on celebrating because of a few extra grams of fat.  However, there is a difference between a few extras to make sure you get a taste of all your favorites and overindulging by failing to pay attention and piling on far more food than what you need or even want.  Those extra bites you keep forcing yourself to eat well after you’re full make you feel unwell at the same time that they work against all your health, weight and fitness goals.

Therefore, it’s a good idea to learn about what is contained in all your favorite entrees, side dishes and desserts. That way, you can make an informed decision regarding how much you want to eat, meaning that you’re more likely to eat an appropriate amount.

Yes, you’ll still likely consume more Thanksgiving calories than you would from a regular meal. However, if you keep on track on most days, then a bit extra on specific holidays won’t hold you back – at least not by much.

Answer Key

How well did you do on the Thanksgiving calories quiz?

  1. B – White turkey meat with skin on is even higher than a slice of ham with its sweet glaze. It’s the skin that tips the scales. Four ounces of white turkey meat without skin is 150 calories, the same amount with the skin is 190 calories, but that portion of honey-baked ham is 170 calories.
  2. C – All these sides are high in fat and calories. However, it’s the casserole that has the highest caloric density. One cup contains 450 calories and about as much sugar as a serving of dessert. Comparatively, 1 cup of mashed potatoes topped by ¼ cup of gravy contains 420 calories, and 1 cup of stuffing contains 400.
  3. C – Pecan pie is definitely the dessert with the most calories, containing 500 per piece. Apple has 450, while pumpkin pie contains 360 even with the whipped cream on top (based on 1/8 of a 9” pie).
