When it comes to surgery there is a mile long list of common concerns, scarring, side effects, which procedure is going to be minimally invasive, and so on. Recently there have been many advancements in surgery procedure to make the treatment as minimally invasive as possible.

What Are the Least Invasive Surgeries for Obesity Treatment?

Currently there are 3 least invasive surgeries for obesity treatment. Those 3 include:

  • Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery
  • (VBG) Vertical Banded Gastroplasty
  • Mixed Surgeries that combine both restrictive and malabsorptive procedures.

The right one for you will depend on a range of different factors.  After all, there is a reason that there are many different types of procedure.  Just because an option is the among the least invasive surgeries for obesity treatment, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be the most effective for you.

Which Procedure Tops the List?

The safest and least invasive surgery currently is Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery. It is currently the 2nd most common surgery for obesity, after Gastric Bypass. The Gastric Banding Surgery includes some of the following procedures:

  • A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, laparoscopic tools are used.
  • The stomach then becomes a pouch that only holds approximately 1 ounce of food.
  • There is a plastic tubing running from the band to just below the skin. This tubing allows saline, or salt water to run through the skin and around the tube, this causes the band to shrink. The band can be shrunk or expanded as needed, leaving less side effects, and more weight loss.

The next least invasive surgery for obesity treatment is called Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG). VBG is similar to the Gastric banding and also has a band, however, there is also stomach stapling involved.

When you have restrictive procedures a couple of the most common side effects are nausea and vomiting-usually with some band adjustment, this can be fixed. Only 10% of cases have minor complications with the wound, like infection or bleeding. Gastric Banding death is 1 in 2,000 people, usually with other risks or complications involved. Vertical Banded Gastroplasty is a bigger risk of complication compared to Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding or Gastric Bypass. For this, surgeons rarely perform this particular restrictive procedure.

There Are Risks Even with the Least Invasive Surgeries for Obesity Treatment

Least invasive surgeries for obesity treatment also include a combination procedure, something using both restrictive and malabsorptive procedures. Restrictive procedures are the effective weight loss treatment. Recently they have combined it with malabsorption by stomach stapling and adding a new stomach pouch to the intestines to lessen food absorption. All these minimally invasive surgeries can be reversed, and most times have little to no side effects.

Which Option is Right for You?

Your obesity treatment is a highly personal strategy that you will need to discuss with your doctor.  Whether you should have one of the least invasive surgeries, a different procedure, or should go an entirely different route will depend on many different factors.  Have a good talk with your doctor about your medical history, what you’ve already tried, and any other concerns you might have.

Remember that surgical options might best serve you, or they might not.  Moreover, it might be a journey to reach that decision, as it could be safer and more effective for you to try other methods of obesity treatment beforehand.  Do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions so you will feel confident that you understand both the advantages and drawbacks.  Think realistically regarding the way it will affect your life and how you will move forward once you’ve healed from the procedure.
