High sugar shockers are those secret little places where you think you’re doing okay, when it turns out that you may as well be consuming sweeteners straight-up.  The average American adult consumes 77 grams of added sugar every day (almost 20 teaspoons), according to the American Heart Association. That translates to about 60 pounds of added sugar per year. This doesn’t include the sugars naturally occurring in foods such as fruit.

Why Make the Switch

Weight control isn’t the only reason it’s a good idea to swap out those high sugar shockers for low- or no-sugar drinks.  Consuming too much of the sweet stuff every day increases the risk of chronic health conditions ranging from heart disease to type II diabetes, and from obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to others.  If you’re trying to reduce your intake of sugars, your first step should be to have a look at what you’re drinking every day.
